Job Description:

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The Employment Specialist provides individualized job development, work skills training and supervision to individuals receiving services ("individuals") in a community-based work setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in developing community-based employment opportunities
  • Identifies accommodations and modifications needed to assist the individual in obtaining and maintaining employment, while negotiating with the employer
  • Provides job-specific skills training for individuals.
  • Required to attend off-site meetings, including weeknights and weekends.
  • Applies problem solving techniques to increase community independence and foster a positive and supportive work environment
  • Provides interview preparation as well as job-specific skills training
  • Monitors quality and quantity of individuals’ work and maintains required caseload.
  • Provides work-related instruction, as needed.
  • Provides monthly follow-up services for individuals.
  • Provide support throughout the pre-employment phase and hiring process as needed.
  • Acts as a liaison between day services, employers, family/care providers, Care Coordinators, ACCES-VR and other outside agencies
  • Coordinates schedule with SEMP team to meet the needs of the individuals receiving services
  • Maintains documentation including, but not limited to, case notes, supported employment habilitation plans, incident reports and monthly documentation in accordance with regulatory compliance and Agency expectations
  • Participates in the development of Care Plans and goals as it directly relates to obtaining and maintaining employment
  • Assesses individuals in community settings to determine the individual’s skills, abilities and unique talents, while supporting the individuals to make informed decisions
  • Participates in Agency in-services.
  • Consistently complies with all Agency policies and procedures.
  • Transports individuals receiving services as well as providing mobility training
  • Facilitates benefit planning as needed in collaboration with ACCES-VR, Neighborhood Legal Services, Independent Living Center, or other agencies
  • Represents agency in program events and informational sessions.
  • Participates in professional development and community and inter-agency committee to remain current on changing trends and program requirements.
  • Constantly maintains high performance standards at work with regard to personal behavior and interactions with staff, individuals receiving services and outside agencies.
  • Respects privacy and confidentiality of people being served.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Skills:

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • High level of written and oral communication skills
  • High level of interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of behavioral techniques and developmental disabilities to assist in the care of individuals receiving services
  • Knowledge of computer and ability to utilize word processing programs, preferred
  • Possess good time management skills
  • First Aid and CPR training will be provided upon hire
  • Flexibility with work schedule
  • Ability to work independently as well as in conjunction with other staff members and members of the agency team.
  • Familiarity with benefits planning

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Preferred: Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling or other closely related developmental disabilities or human services field.

Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education or other closely related developmental disabilities field, PLUS one year full-time direct service experience with developmentally disabled adults.

Valid New York State driver’s license in good standing, New York automobile insurance, and a reliable motor vehicle required.
