Job Description:

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION

Provide evaluation services, as per the guidelines set forth by the New York State Department of Education to a diverse population of 2.5 to 5 year olds with identified medical and/or suspected developmental disabilities. Participate in the planning, goal writing or creation of positive family outcomes/creation of an Individual Education Plan that improves cognitive, behavioral and/or social emotional developments of the child evaluated. Provide a comprehensive written evaluation report and communicate effectively with families and other professionals.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to the Early Childhood Community Services Director

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Establish an effective data collection and charting system to evaluate children; conduct an evaluation in accordance with the NYS Dept. of Education’s regulations.
  • Provide a comprehensive written evaluation report in accordance with Agency and NYS Dept. of Education’s regulations/preferences.
  • Make appropriate service recommendations as a result of formal evaluations, clinical judgment and child’s needs.
  • Review clinical or educational records and case histories when available.
  • Ensure that verbal and written communications including tone, demeanor, and content with child and parents are professional, appropriate and respectful.
  • Model and demonstrate expected child behavior.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently, as well as in conjunction with other staff members and members of the agency team (collaboration).
  • Consistently comply with all agency policies and procedures.
  • Constantly maintain high professional standards at work with regard to personal behavior and interactions with other staff and families.

*It may also be requested that you attend CPSE meetings for children that you may or may not have personally evaluated. All of the child’s relevant reports and a summary will be made available to you prior to a meeting for your review; additional compensation would be made.

*Typically a Social History will be completed and provided prior to your evaluation. At times social histories are not available, e.g. if a child was previously evaluated by another agency; in this case it would be expected tyat an informal interview be conducted via phone with parent(s)/guardian(s). On occasion you may be asked to complete a formal Social History with written report; additional compensation would be made.

  • Possess good time management skills.

  • High level of behavior management skills.
  • Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to administer developmentally appropriate and standardized evaluations.
  • Knowledge of computer based systems, including but not limited to agency email, word processing.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of basic computer skills needed to access IEP Direct and similar programs.
  • Familiarity with applicable standardized/non-standardized tests and assessment tools.
  • Ability to administer diagnostic tests with a high degree of efficiency and to accurately score tests.
  • Ability to interpret test results appropriately taking into account developmental norms, functional communication, child’s progress or lack of progress and any other pertinent information helpful in determining service recommendations or changes.
  • Ability to communicate child’s current level of functioning or other pertinent information orally and in written reports.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current literature and trends relating to the profession.

EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING

  • Minimal Education: Master’s degree in Education with a NYS School Psychologist designation from an accredited institution. A national accreditation is preferred.
  • Preferred Education: NYS Licensed clinical Doctorate degree in Psychology from an accredited institution.
